Standards:

This statement is to inform students and parents of the general policies for Design and Visual Communications.

Welcome to the world of graphic design. Some of the objectives of this class are: The application of the elements and principles of design, color theory, typography, ethics and values in the work place, copyright laws and legal Issues, and exploring career possibilities in graphic design. Students will also have the opportunity to participate In the SkillsUSA program. The program of study tor this class ls based on the State Core Standards.

2.      Learning expectations

Overarching Goals:

Studio: Apply critical-thinking skills to execute graphic design techniques creatively, using the basic elements and principles

of design and exploring a wide variety of design media and processes, together with developing design skills using computer graphic programs

Aesthetics: Form values and opinions by exploring design, design problems, advertising, the media and related theories

Design Criticism: Judge and interpret meaning in advertising and the media as it relates to self and the world

Design History: View, analyze, discuss, research and respond to advertising and the media from the present and past

Visual Culture: Analyze and make informed decisions and opinions through reflecting on the influence visual culture has on society and self

3.      Assessment of progress and achievement

This is a Career and Technical Education class. Students will have the opportunity to take the state CTE Proficiency Exam. This test is offered one time during the semester. There is no makeup for this test if the student misses the test date.

Class Work will be in the form of reading, research and design projects, studying for the state CTE Proficiency Exam, vocabulary and chapter quizzes.

·  This is a lab class, which means most of our work will be completed in class. Some students may feel they need additional time to complete assignments. For this reason, many assignments will be accepted up to one week late without penalty. After an assignment is more than one week late it will receive late credit.

·  No work will be accepted or scored into the next term.

4.      Course materials

There is a lab fee per semester. This fee helps to cover lab expenses. Pay your fee at the cashier’s office to Ms. Wood’s art account. Students will need 2 2-pocket folders.

5.      classroom procedures

TIMPVIEW PRIDE:

I.  Attendance: Come to class and be on time! Make sure you read the school policy in the student handbook.

·  Come to class: This is a “lab” class and attendance is crucial. Excessive absences will result in a lowered grade.

·  Tardies: Students that are not in the class and ready for instruction are considered tardy (see school policy for penalties and make-ups). Students are expected to sign the tardy log upon entering the class after the bell. If a late student fails to sign the tardy log after the role has been taken they will be counted as absent.

·  Truancies: See school policy in the student handbook. A student who leaves the room without permission will receive a truant.

II. The work you turn in must be your own, specifically created for this class. Cheating will not be tolerated. See school policy for academic integrity in the student handbook.

III. Fees and materials:

·  There is a lab fee per semester. This fee helps to cover lab expenses. Pay your fee at the cashier’s office to Ms. Wood’s art account. Students are expected to take care of all classroom equipment and will be responsible for any damages. Fines will be charged for damaged equipment.

IV. Class rules:

·  No eating or drinking in the classroom.

·  No personal music equipment or cell phones. These items will be removed. See school policy for electronic devices in the student handbook.

·  Dress modestly: See school policy for dress and grooming standards in the student handbook.

·  “G” rated art room: No swearing, no violence, no sexual language or behavior. See school and district policy for standards of statement on orderly and safe schools in the student handbook.

·  RESPECT: Good manners should govern all student and adult behavior at all times in and outside of class. Respect of teacher, classroom equipment, our school, classmates, and self are expected at all times.

·  Clean up: Everyone is expected to clean up work areas at the end of class. Students will not be dismissed from class until clean-up is complete.
