Dear Provo City School District Community, Families, and Students,
This is a reminder that the Provo City School District Board of Education is requesting feedback and input from all stakeholders (parents, students, employees) on a the possibility of implementing a Cell Phone Policy in all PCSD schools. You may complete the survey by clicking on this link. The survey will remain open until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25.
As a school district, we continuously strive to create an environment conducive to learning and growth for all our students. With this goal in mind, the Provo City School District Board of Education is considering the implementation of a district-wide cell phone policy.
We recognize that cell phones and technology have become an integral part of our daily lives, and they offer numerous opportunities for learning and communication. However, we also acknowledge the potential distractions they can pose in the classroom setting, contributing to an undesirable impact on our students’ learning.
Our aim is not to demonize cell phones, but rather to foster a culture where instruction can occur without the distractions that cell phones bring. We believe that by establishing clear guidelines for cell phone use, we can create a more focused learning environment that maximizes student engagement and achievement and provides consistency across the district.
We are concerned about the impact cell phone use in the classroom may have on the educational outcomes of our students. By implementing a thoughtful and balanced cell phone policy, we aim to create a district culture where student achievement and connection in the classroom is a priority. We are also increasingly aware of the impact cell phones in our schools have on the mental and emotional health of our students, and believe these go hand-in-hand with their ability to grow as learners and connect as peers.
It’s important to note that our district relies on technology, including social media, to communicate with students, parents, and the broader community. We know cell phones are an important communication tool that provide various avenues for people to receive information. Our goal is to help students have a healthy relationship with their cell phones by clearly establishing time and place for cell phone use in our schools, specifically related to our classrooms and instructional spaces.
Thank you.
