Secondary Math 1 Syllabus

Course Description/Overview/Welcome Statement

Secondary Math 1 is a year long math course where students will earn 0.25 credits per quarter completed, or in other words 1 credit per year. This class is designed to be a Freshman level class that prepares students for Secondary Math 2 and Secondary math 3.

Learning Expectations

Secondary Math 1 covers the following Learning Targets: solving equations, solving inequalities, solving systems of equations and inequalities, graphing linear and exponential functions, interpreting descriptive statistics in both one and two variables (categorical and numerical), performing geometric transformations in the plane, performing constructions and writing coordinate proofs in geometry.

Each topic will be tested at the end of the unit.

Assessment of Progress

Homework, warm-up, class notes and quizzes all serve as formative assessments to inform my teaching. Unit tests serve as summative assessments. The point distribution for each activity for the class is as follows:

Assignments – 5 pts

Quizzes – 5 pts

Notes – 20 pts

Tests – 200 pts

Powerschool is updated weekly at minimum.

Course Materials

Students are required to bring the following materials every day: pencil, big eraser, highlighter, a scientific calculator, and the notes packet that I provide.

While I do not require any assignments from the textbook, Big Ideas Math Integrated Mathematics I  by Ron Larson and Laurie Boswell is available to be checked out as an additional resource.

Classroom Procedures

I will be employing AVID teaching strategies in Secondary Math 1. Students are expected to participate in the lesson exercises and then summarize what they have learned at the end of each day.  Attendance is mandatory in Secondary Math 1. There will be a new assignment every day and is due at the beginning of the following class period. I accept late work with a small point deduction. Tests at the end of the unit must be completed in pencil. Students are eligible to retake tests provided they have completed all homework and in-class assignments prior to the test retake.

Calendar of Due Dates for Major Assignments

You can expect a test approximately every 3 weeks in Secondary Math 1. I cannot give a calendar of when I will be administering each test because those dates are subject to change depending on student understanding during the lessons.
