Spanish 3

Welcome to Spanish 3 Class with Señor Reynolds. I am excited for a year of teaching Spanish and I hope you are excited for a year of learning Spanish.

I believe students learn best when they are immersed in a context-rich Spanish language environment and have opportunities to communicate from the very beginning. Because of this, I ask that you commit to give 100% effort to use all the Spanish you know, and the Spanish you learn throughout the year, every day of class.

Course Description: You will receive one credit towards graduation upon completion of this course.

This is a class where you will be “forced” to use the Spanish that you have learned and the Spanish that we are learning. We will focus on acquisition in this class rather than simply learning. Learning how to speak a language is a wonderful skill and one that will be beneficial as you get older. However, acquiring the language is what will stay with you throughout your life.

Making mistakes is a very important part of this class. Each of us will make a mistake and I hope that you make multiple mistakes each class. When you make a mistake, you are trying. When you continue to try, you will continue to make mistakes. I don’t ask you to be perfect, I ask that you try.

This is a class that is heavy in participation. As long as you come to class, try your best to speak the language, have a good attitude, and have fun, you will pass this class. I try my best to have you not worry about your grade. Too many students focus more on the grade than the acquiring of the language. Don’t worry about your grade! Leave the grade up to me. If you do what was mentioned above, you will get the grade that you want.

We will be using the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and the ACTFL Proficiency-Based Grading Scale to guide us in the acquiring of Spanish. We will go more into depth of what these mean for you and me as we get going with the course.

Expectations:

Señor Reynolds expects the following from each student:

Show up on time! I cannot stress this enough. It is very important that you show up on time to class. The first five minutes of each class is when we do a review of previous classes. If you have been absent, this is when you will know what you missed the previous class. Come prepared with all the supplies you will need for this class. I am not your mom or your personal Wal-mart. I don’t have pens, paper, pencils, etc. to give to each student. Respect yourself, your classmates, your classroom, and your teacher. If you respect me, I will respect you. It is that simple. Be honest. Don’t cheat or use Google Translate! I can’t tell you how much I dislike Google Translate. It is a great tool, but too often students will use it for sentences, phrases, and paragraphs. When you allow Google to write for you, your ability to acquire the language will be gone. We have class dictionaries and you can pull those out anytime you would like. Try your best. It is very important that you try. This is a level three Spanish class and that means that you have a little interest in the language. If you are going to take the class then why not try and do your best to be able to speak and acquire the language. Like mentioned previously, don’t let the worry of your grade cause you to not acquire Spanish. Leave the grade up to me and I will not disappoint.

Electronics:

I will follow the same procedures that are in the Timpview High School Handbook. Students may not use Electronics during class. I will confiscate devices that are being used during class time. I know that cell phones and iPods are a huge part of life now days. That is why I am willing to give breaks to use phones, iPods, etc. I understand that classes are long and it’s hard to not be on instagram for that long, so I will allow what I call, “tech time”. This is not something that is given without sacrifice on the part of the students. I will give “tech time” only if the class participates, is off electronics during the other parts of class, and if the students follow the directions of the teacher. I like to reward my students, but I also expect students to be respectful to what I ask of them. I will take any phone or electronic that I see being used during instruction time. The first offense will be the phone being taken for the remainder of the class period. The second offense will be me taking the phone for the class period. The third offense will be the phone taken down to the main office. ANY PHONE TAKEN TO MAIN OFFICE WILL RESULT IN A PARENT OR GUARDIAN COMING TO THE SCHOOL TO PICK UP THE PHONE OR DEVICE.

Grading:

A = 100­-93.00 % B­- = 82.99-­80.00 % D+ = 69.00-67.00 %

A­- = 92.99­-90.00 % C+ = 79.99-­77.00 % D = 66.00-63.00 %

B+ = 89.99­-87.00 % C = 76.99-­73.00 % D- = 62.00-60.00%

B = 86.99-­83.00 % C­- = 72.99­-70.00 % F = 59.99 % or less

Your grade will be earned from the following categories:

Participation: 40%

Tests/Quizzes: 30%

Homework: 30%

Throughout the year we will have many different opportunities for the students to show their mastery of the concepts that will be taught in class. Each day the students will demonstrate their knowledge in Spanish. This will give each student the opportunity to show me how well they are doing.

Participation:

I expect students to participate every day. You will be graded on daily participation as well as weekly participation. This will be part of your grade for each term. There are many different ways to participate: speak Spanish, not sleep, do your bell work each day, answer questions that Señor Reynolds asks you, complete and turn in assignments we do in class, etc. Participation will be a large part of your grade. Besides tests or projects, the rest of your grade will be participation.

Homework:

Students will be required to do thirty minutes of homework outside of class each week. Students will report each week on what they did for homework for the week. If the last day the student has Spanish is on Thursday then Thursday is when the student should turn in his or her homework report. The same will apply for the weeks that the last class is on Friday. This type of homework is a little different than most others. The homework that each student will need to complete each week is thirty minutes of being immersed in the Spanish language. This can be done in many different ways: listening to Spanish music, watch a television show or movie in Spanish (you can have English subtitles), spend time with duolingo, conversations with a fluent Spanish-speaker, reading a book or any other reading material in the language, write a story or poem, etc. There are many different things that students can do to fulfill the requirements for this assignment. If there is anything else any student wants to do for this assignment and it was not mentioned, talk to Señor Reynolds about it.

Completing this homework assignment is all about the honor code. Señor Reynolds will never know if a student completes the assignment or not. If a student signs the homework slip, they will receive full points. The hope is that students will take advantage of this easy assignment so it can help with the acquiring of the Spanish language.

Attendance:

I will follow the attendance policy from Timpview High School Handbook. It is extremely important that students show up to class as much as possible. This is a class that is heavy in participation. It is hard to participate if you are not in class. We will take notes in my class. There are certain units or tests that I will allow notes to be used on the test. If you miss a day of class, it is important that you grab notes from a friend or classmate to make sure that you have what we covered the class you were absent.

Late Work:

I don’t believe in late work. There will rarely be an assignment that you will need to complete outside of class, so if you miss a day where we did an in-class assignment, it if your responsibility to complete the assignment before the end of the term. Students will be given as much time as possible to complete any work. All that I ask is that you have all your work in by the last day of the term.

Required Materials:

Things to bring to class everyday:

Pens or Pencils. (Blue and black pens only. No other colors.) A notebook to write your answers to questions and quizzes.(Stays in classroom) Expo markers. A great attitude and an eagerness to learn.

Things that you will need to buy and/or have by the second day of class:

Notebooks. ($1-$10 depending on what you want to buy.) Writing utensil. ($1-$5 at Walmart.) Dry erase markers. ($3-$6 at Walmart.)

I am excited to get this year started. There is no doubt in my mind that we will have a wonderful year. We will have fun, work hard, and learn Spanish. I am here to help. Do not ever feel that you can’t come talk to me about your grades, what we are learning, or anything else. I know if you put forth the effort in my class, you will learn. I know it will be a struggle sometimes, but there is no growth without struggle. Please contact me at anytime.
