Work Based Learning Internships

Course Description/Overview/Welcome Statement

OVERVIEW OF COURSE

Internships are available to junior and senior students.  Work-based learning gives students the opportunity to learn a variety of skills by expanding the walls of the classroom to include the community.  By narrowing the gap between theory and practice, work-based learning creates meaning for students.  Through work-based learning, students have the opportunity to see how classroom instruction connects to the world of work and future career opportunities.

INTERNSHIP PREREQUISITE:  3.0 overall GPA; B Average in related class to internship (for example:  Physiology is required to complete a hospital internship); good attendance record; be in good standing with the school.

Learning Expectations

COURSEWORK

All assignments for this course will be submitted electronically on Canvas—the Learning Management System (LMS) adopted by Provo School District.

TIME CARDS:

Students will be required to keep track of hours on the time card provided. Time cards can be printed from the link in Canvas. Time cards must be filled out completely and accurately to receive full credit. Time cards need to reflect the days the student should be attending. If the student is unable to attend on a scheduled day, the student needs to indicate the reason for not attending (sick, school performance, etc.). Students will take a picture of the completed and signed time card and upload the picture to Canvas to get credit. Time cards will be due no later than the Monday following the week completed.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Students will be required to submit an assignment each week that teaches about various workplace skills. Instructions for these assignments will be given in Canvas. Assignments will be due on the Monday following the week they are assigned.

GRADING

CANVAS LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Canvas is a Learning Management System that allows students to access and submit assignments from home and school.  It allows students to see when assignments are due and gives a secure way to receive feedback from the teacher after the assignment has been graded.  Canvas can also be used to send reminders and notifications to students, if the student chooses to set this up. This is the same system many of the state colleges and universities in Utah are currently using.  You can access their official website by going to provo.instructure.com.  The links below give detailed information about the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

Classroom Procedures

LATE WORK POLICY

Employers want employees who complete their best work ON TIME.  To help students understand and develop the critical workplace skill of time management, a late work penalty will be enforced. If a student submits work late, Canvas will automatically deduct 5% per day. Students will be allowed to submit work up to the last day of each term.

Calendar of Due Dates for Major Assignments

Time cards and assignments will be due on Monday for the previous week. See Canvas for details.
