LITERACY STRATEGIES 11/12

I AM THE TEACHER

I will make you read more, write better, and work harder because I will cheer the loudest and the longest for you. I am your biggest fan. I will protect you. I will fight for you. I am your advocate with the big bard in the sky. It is my great desire and honor to teach and serve you.

YOU ARE THE STUDENT

You will read more, write better, and work harder. You will arrive to class with intent to learn. While you are here, you will respect me, yourself, your classmates, and this classroom. You are a word ninja whether you know it or not. You are a warrior poet. You will take the skills that I teach you and, when you leave the classroom, you will use them to serve yourself and others.

THIS IS OUR CLASS

Together, we will take some of the greatest works in the English language and learn to read critically and write confidently. Together, we will help each other achieve your IEP goals, earn the credits required to graduate, and develop English language and literacy skills that will benefit you far beyond high school. We will laugh. We will cry. I will occasionally buy you Big Macs and you will amaze me with your work.

You are blessed to also have a Gen Ed English class with an incredible teacher: Mrs. Moulton (11th grade) and Ms. Chausow (12thgrade), each equipped with exhilarating curriculum and activities. I will include lessons on grammar, sentence structure, paragraph building, and essay writing to keep you on pace. I will also include reading comprehension exercise (including the RI) to prepare you for success.

THESE ARE THE GRADES

You will be graded on the expectations set forth in this disclosure statement as well as in the classroom.

You will be graded on the quality of your work (quizzes, tests, writing/reading assignments, assessments) in direct relation to any accommodations and modifications you may have.

I do allow make-up work. Talk to me. Let’s make it happen.

You (student and parent/guardian) will be able to review these grades on a regular basis through Power School. Please check your grades often.

THIS IS THE FINE PRINT

Come to class. I can’t teach and you can’t learn if you’re not here. Come here grumpy. Come here sad. Come here late if you have to but get here any way you can.

I allow electronic devices in class as long as they do not interfere with the lesson and/or your learning. I will be the judge of this. Amaze me with your work and I will amaze you with my trust. However, I retain the right to confiscate these items if they become a distraction.

If you choose to bring food or drink to class, then you are choosing to leave the area cleaner than when you got here. Otherwise, this privilege will be taken away.

Be an active participant. Our class thrives on positive discussion. I want to hear your voice. I want your opinion. Sometimes, this means shouting out an answer. Most times, this means raising your hand and waiting for me to call on you. I will let you know.

REMEMBER

Reading will make you smarter. Writing will make you stronger.

Learn to control the words and you will control your world.
