Learning Expectations

Course Description

This is the first in a sequence of “hanks on” courses that tie observations and concepts common to a variety of different engineering disciplines in order to develop a better understanding of basic math and science principles used in engineering.  By utilizing problem-solving skills in a laboratory environment, students will develop skills and attitudes that impact and expand occupational opportunities.  Students will be exploring the topics of the Engineering Design Process (Engineering Notebooks), Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.

Course Prerequisites

There is no prerequisite for this class.  This class is not a concurrent enrollment class.

Classroom Procedures

Student Expectations

Students are expected to be present during class time and to take full advantage of this time to focus on work throughout the class period. There may be homework assignments that will need to be completed so that the student will be successful in this class.

Students will be given 5 pts daily for being on time (this is applied to their grade at the end of each term).  If the student is tardy they will lose all 5pts.  Additionally, students will be given points daily for completing the daily task/assignment.  If the student does not complete the assignment during class they can come that day during lunch or after school to complete it for full credit.  Once the school day is done and the student has not completed the daily task/assignment the student will get half of the points for turning it in late.  If a student is absent (that is an excused absent) they will have two weeks to make up the work for full credit.  For excused absences the 5pts for attendance does not count against their grade.

All work will be available through the Canvas Online System.  All reading material, assignments, quizzes, test will be given online.  If any parent would like to be added into the canvas system just e-mail me at jenniferb@provo.edu and request to be added as an observer to your son or daughters account.  Please include in your e-mail who your son or daughter is and which class they are attending.

Each student should have their own flash drive to be taken between class and home.

Class Rules:

1.  Come prepared and ON TIME to learn and work every day!  We will work the entire period on drafting related curriculum

2.  No Cell Phones.

3.  No playing computer games during class time.

4.  Listen and actively participate in class discussions.

5.  Respect the rights of others to learn.  Don’t talk while the instructor is giving lessons and don’t disturb others.

6.  Do not listen to your iPod etc. while instruction is being given.

7.  Don’t’ cheat.  A student caught cheating will receive a “0” for that assignment, quiz, or test.

Attendance/Game Playing/Cell Phone Policies

Each student will be given 100 points at the beginning of each term for not playing video games or having cell phones out during class time.  Each time the student gets out their cell phone, playing video games, watching YouTube, etc. will have 5 points deducted from the 100 points given.  The student can earn back the points by coming in during lunch or during consultation time to work one on one with me to make up the work missed.  By doing this it allows parents or guardians to look at power school at the end of each day to see if their son/daughter is playing during class time or is on task.  Hopefully, between myself and the parents/guardians we can help students stay on task during class time and as a result have better grades overall.

Students are expected to be on time to class.  Attendance is take at the beginning of each class and will have consequences for being tardy/absent/truant as per school policy.  Any student who leaves during class time and does not return in a timely manner will be called in and marked down as truant.
