Math 1030 Syllabus

Course Description/Overview/Welcome Statement

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to communicate, interpret, and analyze quantitative information found in the media and in everyday life to make sound personal, professional, and civic decisions.

Learning Expectations

Upon successful completion, students should be able to:

1. Explain real world information presented in mathematical forms (e.g., equations, graphs, diagrams, tables, words), including making reasonable predictions of trend data.

2. Convert relevant information into various mathematical forms (e.g., equations, graphs, diagrams, tables, words) that are appropriate and accurate.

3. Perform calculations that are sufficiently comprehensive and elegant (clear, concise, etc.) to solve authentic problems.

4. Analyze real world data as the basis for competent judgments, drawing reasonable and appropriately qualified conclusions.

5. Make and evaluate important assumptions in estimation, modeling, and data analysis using a compelling rationale for why each assumption is appropriate.

6. Express quantitative evidence in support of an argument or specific purpose (in terms of what evidence is used and how it is formatted, presented, and contextualized).

Assessment of Progress

EXAMS:  There will be 4 exams, one for each unit.  2 projects, a budgeting and stock market project, that will count as exams.  Then the end of the semester there will be a comprehensive final.  No make-up tests will be given.  If you maintain an 80% average for your homework assignments, you will be able to replace low exam score with final exam percentage

Course Materials

PREREQUISITE:  Successful completion SM1, SM2, and SM3 (with a C or better), or appropriate placement score as determined by department.  If you have not satisfied this prerequisite, you will be administratively withdrawn by the math advisor.

NOTE:  For this three (3) credit-hour course students should expect to spend up to

5+ hours a week completing course activities.

Classroom Procedures

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

Cell phones on silent.  Treat each other with respect.

Academic Honesty:

No academic dishonesty will be tolerated in this course. The penalty for a first offense is an “F” for the assignment/quiz/test; the assignment/quiz/test cannot be redone. A second offense means that you fail the course and will be reported to the Department Chair and to Student Advising.  Below is the definition of cheating taken from the current Utah Valley University Catalog. This definition does not apply to group work assigned by the instructor that you have actively participated in. Please read the complete “Student Rights and Responsibilities” section in the current UVU catalog so that you are aware of your academic responsibilities.

Cheating:  Cheating is the act of using, attempting to use, or providing others with unauthorized information, materials, or study aids in academic work. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, passing examination answers to or taking examinations for someone else or preparing or copying others’ academic work.

HOMEWORK:  Due dates are listed on Course Outline.  All homework sections should be completed before taking exam on material, so due dates may fluctuate on exam weeks.  There will be a 30% penalty for late homework turned in before the Exam.  No homework will be accepted after the Exam for the Unit.

QUIZZES:     Quizzes will be given for each section in class.  If you do not take a quiz on time, a zero will be recorded for that grade.   NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES.  3 low Quizzes will be dropped each term.
