ORCHESTRA – CONCERT (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Previous experience on a stringed instrument

Instruments for rent available, if needed. The Concert Orchestra is a performing ensemble preparatory to Sinfonia and the Philharmonic Orchestra. No audition is required. Emphasis is placed on building musicianship and performance skills. Attendance is mandatory for all dress rehearsals and performances.

ORCHESTRA – SINFONIA (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Band – Concert or audition

Sinfonia is medium-advanced performing ensemble primarily for 9th – 11th grade string players that feel more confident in note reading and technique. Continued emphasis will be placed on building musicianship and performance skills both individually and as an ensemble. Performances in region and state festivals are part of the required curriculum. Possible tour invitations. Limited number of instruments for rent, if needed.

ORCHESTRA – PHILHARMONIC (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Audition

Award winning, advanced, full-orchestra ensemble. This ensemble performs music for strings, winds, and percussion. Develops competence and musical sensitivity through study and performance of masterworks as well as popular orchestral literature. Desire and motivation to excel as a musician crucial to success. Performances in Region and State festivals are part of the required curriculum. Possible tours out of state. A limited number of instruments for rent, if needed.

ORCHESTRA – CHAMBER (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Audition

Advanced-level string ensemble similar to Philharmonic Orchestra except it explores string chamber music as well. Members of this ensemble can also perform with the Philharmonic Orchestra. Develops competence and musical sensitivity through study and performance of masterworks as well as popular orchestral literature. Desire and motivation to excel as a musician crucial to success as students will be learning a lot more musical repertoire. Performances in Region and State festivals are part of the required curriculum. Possible tours out of state. A limited number of instruments for rent, if needed.

BAND – COLOR GUARD (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: None

This course will focus on teaching movement through the use of equipment such as flags and auxiliary equipment. Basic dance, flag, rifle, and choreography skills will be taught. No previous experience is necessary, and the class is open to all 9 – 12 grade students. Concurrent enrollment in Marching Band is not required, though recommended. All class members will be able to compete in the winter guard season, and will participate in a concert towards the end of each semester.

BAND – CONCERT (FA)

The Concert Band I is an intermediate-advanced ensemble. Emphasis is placed on building music performance skills in preparation for Symphonic Band auditions. Concert Band I performs at concerts, festivals, and assemblies. Participation in Marching Band is encouraged.

BAND – JAZZ ENSEMBLE (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Audition and concurrent enrollment in Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, or Percussion (Piano and guitar is exempt)

The Jazz Band prepares all types of jazz, rock, Latin, and other music appropriate for the group. Performances include concerts, festivals and assemblies.

BAND – JAZZ ENSEMBLE ADV (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Audition and concurrent enrollment in Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, or Percussion (Piano and guitar is exempt)

The Jazz Band prepares all types of jazz, rock, Latin, and other music appropriate for the group. Performances include concerts, festivals and assemblies. Will help prepare you for Jazz Band 1.

BAND – PERCUSSION (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Audition

Percussion is open to students with any music background (not necessarily percussion). Students learn basic rudiments, mallet technique, timpani technique, Latin instruments, and basic musicianship. Emphasis is placed on music literacy. Percussion students perform as an ensemble and as the percussion section of the Concert Band I at concerts, festivals, assemblies, and games. Participation in Marching Band is encouraged.

  • Prerequisite: Audition

Percussion I is an auditioned class. Students learn basic rudiments, mallet technique, timpani technique, Latin instruments, and basic musicianship. Emphasis is placed on music literacy. Percussion students perform as an ensemble and as the percussion section of the Symphonic Band, Concert II and Orchestra at concerts, festivals, assemblies, and games. Participation in Marching Band is encouraged.

BAND – SYMPHONIC (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Audition

Membership includes the finest woodwind and brass players. Emphasis is placed on continued development of musicianship and performing standard wind literature. Membership in Marching Band is encouraged.

BAND – WIND SYMPHONY (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Audition

Wind Symphony membership includes the finest woodwind and brass players. Emphasis is placed on continued development of musicianship and performing standard wind literature. This ensemble will tour, record, and perform at festivals/conferences. It is preferred that all members take private lessons. Membership in Marching Band is preferred.

CHOIR – MEN’S CHOIR (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: None

This class is designed for beginning and intermediate boys who wish to develop the vocal and musical skills needed to be a part of the Acappella Choir. The choir performs 4 – 6 times during the school year. Attendance at dress rehearsal and concerts is mandatory.

CHOIR – WOMEN’S CHOIR (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: None

This class is designed for beginning and intermediate boys who wish to develop the vocal and musical skills needed to be a part of the Acappella Choir. The choir performs 4-6 times during the school year. Attendance at dress rehearsal and concerts is mandatory.

CHOIR – SORELLE VOCE (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 10 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Teacher approval

This choir is for advanced women who wish to further develop their vocal and musical skills and to help prepare women who want to advance to the Acappella or Madrigals Choirs. This choir performs 6-8 times a year including at least one festival in early spring. Attendance at dress rehearsals and concerts is mandatory.

CHOIR – ACAPPELLA (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 11 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Audition

The choir performs 20-25 times during the school year. Expenses: approximately $165.00 for men’s suit,

$100.00 for ladies’ dresses. 3 – 4 days extracurricular. Added expenses if the group tours. Fundraisers will

be considered.

CHOIR – MADRIGAL SINGERS (FA)

Full Year, Grades 11 – 12

Prerequisite: Audition or teacher signature and concurrent registration in Acappella Performs 20 – 25 times during the school year.

AP MUSIC THEORY (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 10 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Teacher signature and concurrent registration in a performing group

Students should have some experience in music through classes, private lessons, etc. Keyboard experience is extremely helpful, but not necessary. Students will learn and practice fundamentals of music theory (intervals, scales, triads, rhythm), as well as more advanced topics such as composition, ear training, dictation, form and four-part harmony. The final project is a 16-measure four-part chorale or hymn. Those interested in music composition or applying for Sterling Scholar in music should consider this class. Possible concurrent college credit available through Utah Valley University.

MUSIC INDEPENDENT STUDY (FA)

  • Full Year, Grades 9 – 12
  • Prerequisite: Enrollment in a Timpview music performing group and teacher approval

This course is designed to give serious music students extra time. Students set individual goals for each term, which may include major solo works, etudes and other technical studies.
