Speaking

We spend most of our lives in conversations. We tell stories to entertain, persuade, inform - all the same reasons we write. In fact, writing is essentially talking on paper, except that we can go back and edit our writing. Sometimes we wish we could edit our speech!

Speaking is an area that is often overlooked as a formal unit of instruction. This year we will be making several speeches, informal and formal. Since most of my students will be giving formal speeches in their lives, we will be learning how to write an informative and interesting speech and how to present it.

We will also be looking at the nonstandard ways in which we speak, specifically teenage slang. When is speaking slang appropriate and when is it not?
