Child Development

Course Description/Overview/Welcome Statement

Semester Course (.05)

Grade Level 9-12

This course provides students with an understanding of the aspects of human growth and development. Parenting skills are developed as positive guidance techniques and child related issues are studied. Lab experiences in working with young children may be included. At the completion of this course, students will be qualified to take Early Childhood Education.

All Education Hours and Experience Hours may be used toward a CDA (Child Development Associate Credential).

Learning Expectations

Standard 1      Students will evaluate parenting roles and responsibilities

Standard 2     Students will identify growth and development.

Standard 3     Students will identify characteristics of birth defects, pregnancy, prenatal

development, and childbirth.

Standard 4     Students will explain the growth and development of neonates and infants.

Standard 5     Students will explain the growth and development of toddlers and preschoolers.

Standard 6    Students will practice age-appropriate positive guidance techniques and strategies

for coping with challenging situations.

Standard 7    Students will examine issues related to the health and wellness of children.

 

Assessment of Progress

Several different methods of formative assessments will be part of daily lesson plans to check for understanding.

A written examination will be given at the end of each standard unit to check for knowledge.

At the end of the semester each student will take  CTE State Final. Those students receiving at least 80% will receive a State Skills Certificate.

 

Course Materials

Students should have a pen or pencil each day. All other materials will be provided by the teacher.

Classroom Procedures

  • All Timpview High School policies will be strictly enforced. (Please read the student handbook.)
  • All cell phones must be out of sight once the bell rings. (In backpacks, bags, or pockets.) Participation points for the day will be lost for failure to comply with the rule.
  • No photos or videos may be taken in the classroom without teacher permission.
  • The Timpview Attendance Policy is new this year. Please make sure you completely understand the policy.
  • If a student is tardy, he/she must sign the tardy log. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence.
  • A students must have a hall pass whenever leaving class.
  • If a student leaves class without permission, he/she will be marked Truant.
  • If a student is more the 10 minutes late, he/she must check in with the office and have a check-in note before coming to class.
  • It is expected that all students will treat others with respect.
  • Students who are absent have 1 extra day for each day missed to make-up an assignment.
  • Assignments will be marked down one grade (A to A-) if turned it late. After 1 week the assignment will be worth 50%. No late assignments may be turned in after 2 weeks.
  • Students need to make-up quizzes and tests during consultation. Students will have 2 Mondays to do so. (If a Monday is a holiday, it does not count as 1 of the 2.)
  • Grades and attendance must be checked each week by the student to check for errors. After 2 weeks no changes will be made in attendance records.
  • At the end of the term students will have 1 week to check for errors in grading. After 1 week the grade will stand.

Calendar of Due Dates for Major Assignments

Assignments and assessments are evenly distributed throughout the semester. There are no major semester assignments for this course.

Progress Reports and Report Cards

Students should check grades on Power School on a weekly basis. Students are welcome during “Consultation” on Mondays for intervention or help with make-up work. I am also available at lunch and after school unless I have a schedule meeting.
